Still searching for a job? Are you convinced the odds are against you? Up to a point, you might be right. Surprising factors may ultimately decide the outcome of a job interview. Here are some lesser known things to look out for:
The Weather
Everyone talks about the weather, but can it also affect the outcome of your interview? Experts say yes. Medical students, for example, consistently fared worse on rainy days. “Overall, those interviewed on rainy days received about a 1% lower score than those interviewed on sunny days,” researchers said of a University of Toronto study (assessing the effects of weather on school admissions).
The same principles apply to job seekers and job interviews. Recruiting services, human resources professionals, and even in house legal services are likely to let weather impact their mood (and their judgment during your interview) — whether knowingly or not.
The Time and Day of Your Interview
It is may not be entirely fair, but studies show that recruitment agency consultants and even top legal recruiters are likely be more patient and receptive on certain days of the week. The exact time of your interview is also likely to influence interviewers’ tolerance and morale.
“Apparently, 10:30 a.m. on a Tuesday is the best time for you to schedule an interview,” Business Insider and GlassDoor report. “People are shown to be most productive on Tuesdays. It’s also late enough in the day that your interviewer has had time to check their email, have a cup of coffee, and get ready for your arrival,” Business Insider explains.
The Question, Can I Get You Anything? Coffee?
If an interviewer offers you coffee, the safest course of action is to decline. Unless coffee or tea is already prepared, you may be inconveniencing the person who is interviewing you — something you obviously want to avoid. Keep in mind that offering you coffee is more of a nicety than anything else. Saving your interviewer five or ten minutes (they might spend making you coffee) is only likely to work out in your favor.
Don’t let the little things determine the final outcome of your job interview. Whenever possible, schedule interviews strategically — on a sunny day and at the most opportune time of day. Save top job recruiters, including in house legal services, the trouble of small inconveniences like making coffee — and you’re likely to thank yourself (and your new employer) for it. Good refereneces.
